Bilingual students at Collins Middle School will enjoy the benefits of a bilingual education without missing out on the shared middle school experience with their peers.
- Dual Language scholars attend the same classes as their classmates outside the bilingual program, except for Spanish Language and Literature and Mathematics.
- DL students attend assemblies, pep rallies, and school events alongside classmates who do not engage in dual language.
- DL students share lunch with classmates who are not part of the DL program.
- DL scholars and non-DL scholars have the same break/free time schedule.
Benefits of Bilingualism
Research shows that in grades 6 through 12, students in bilingual programs outperform students in monolingual programs.

Spanish Language and Literature
Grade 6 students take a Spanish language and literature course at the language immersion level instead of the Spanish course for beginners.
Mathematics in Spanish
At CMS, mathematics will be taught in Spanish by a bilingual teacher licensed in mathematics and Spanish.
All Other Classes
No child is excluded from their peers who do not participate in the Dual Language program. In addition to Language Arts and Mathematics, students will participate in all other subjects with their classmates.
School Culture
Bilingual learning is part of Collins Middle School’s identity. Announcements will be made in both languages; assemblies will be held in both languages; and summer programs and holiday activities focused on bilingual learning will be offered.
Bilingual Literacy Achievement Awards

At CMS, bilingual students can take exams to earn Bilingualism Pathway Awards, which prepare them to obtain the State Seal of Biliteracy in high school:
- Seal of Biliteracy
- Seal of Biliteracy with Distinction
