Hello CMS Community

Congratulations to our basketball teams and cheerleaders for participating in our first games in almost two years. It was so exciting to see our scholars in action on Wednesday in the CMS gym. Also shout out to our Math Team for finishing 2nd in their district competition Thursday. The top 3 teams were as follows: 1. Marblehead 2. Collins 3. Swampscott. We had over 20 scholars participate on the two teams we had competing.

Basketball Games:
With the surge of COVID cases in our community we are limiting who will be able to attend the game. CMS scholars will not be able to attend and watch their classmates. Basketball and cheerleading team members can have family members attend. We will have a sign-in desk in the lobby for family members to check in at. Following the City of Salem guidelines starting on January 15th family members would have to be vaccinated and will have to show a vaccination card to attend.

SMARTPASS: Beginning Tuesday, CMS will begin using the digital hall pass system SmartPass. SmartPass does not have a GPS tracking system, it is just a digital version of the sign-out sheet and paper passes.

It provides administrators an accounting of which students are outside of the classroom during the school day. In case of emergencies such as fires, severe weather, or building intruders, administrators have real-time access to this critical information. Beyond the uses for emergency situations, the transition from the germ carrying classroom wood blocks used today to digital will also make it easier to identify excessive use of bathrooms or students who may be taking advantage of hallway privileges. This leads to more effective and informative parent-teacher conferences, as well as ensuring students are where they should be – in the classroom learning.

For more information, please visit the vendor’s website at https://www.smartpass.app/faq.

Cell Phones: CMS will be resetting cell phones expectations again with our scholars. We did a reset in October and we will start a new campaign “Away for the Day”  after the break. We will review phone expectations at the school and give data and facts about the negative impact phones have on learning with our scholars.
Process for scholars not following cell phone policy:

  •  First Step: Student receives a warning
  • Second Step: Phone is turned into an administrator and held until the end of the school day.
  • Third Step: For repeated violations of this policy, the school may impose discipline, including but not limited to– detentions, suspensions (in-school & out of school), loss of privileges (such as participation in extracurricular programs or athletics), confiscation of phone up to and until the end of the academic year.

Have a great long weekend!

Principal
