A Transformative Learning Experience: Collins Middle School Showcase Slated for Jan. 24

2024 Collins Middle School Showcase

SALEM (Jan. 5, 2024) – Fresh off its highly successful project-based ‘Transitopia Studio’ learning experience, the 2024 Collins Middle School Showcase is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 24, 6-8 p.m., in the CMS Cafeteria. 

The 2024 Showcase is open to all grade 5 students and families of the City of Salem who are interested in receiving an early start in a hands-on, immersive learning experience in grades 6-8 in programs such as STEM, Career and Technical Education, field trips and immersive learning experiences, after-school activities and care and athletics programs.

Families can learn more about the Middle School’s migration to studio/project-based learning in the following curriculum: 

  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing (STEM): Features coursework such as Energy and the Environment, Robotics, Design and Modeling and Hip-Hop Production.
  • Career and Technical Education: Includes coursework such as Early Education, Food and Nutrition, Green Architecture and Medical Detectives.
  • Immersive Learning and Field Trips: Learning immersion experiences include visits and field trips to the Museum of Science, Salem Sound Coastwatch, Peabody Essex Museum and Neighborhood Walks, in which students observe various Salem neighborhoods to understand the City, it’s history and evolution.
  • After-School Activities and Care: Collins Middle School offers three after-school programs for students and families:
    • CMS is also the site of the Boys and Girls Club of Salem
    • Salem YMCA
    • LEAP, a no-cost, grant-funded program which encompasses team sports, mixed media and youth leadership activities with free transportation.
  • Athletics and Recreation: CMS students can choose from several different interscholastic and intramural sports.
    • Interscholastic sports include baseball and softball as well as boys and girls cross country, basketball, lacrosse and track and field.
    • Intramural sports include indoor and outdoor soccer, basketball and volleyball, with more sports to be added. The CMS gymnasium is also open to students at 7:45 a.m. until the start of school who wish to play basketball.

Faculty and staff will be on hand for questions and discussion regarding studio/project-based learning and curriculum, after-school care and the overall student experience.
