The DESE Expanded Learning Time (ELT) August 2018 newsletter recognized the strength of the Collins STEM programming. Collins Middle School Wins Multiple Design Challenges: Since receiving ELT in 4 years ago, Collins Middle School has established STEM Pathways (biomedicine, computer science, and engineering) for students through its work with Project Lead the Way (PLTW), and now every scholar takes 2 PLTW classes per grade level. Not only has the school received national recognition as a recipient of PLTW’s 2017-2018 Distinguished School Award, students at the school have entered the following design challenge competitions and have earned top recognition: o Best App Design and Best Elevator Speech for Middle School and High School - Greater Boston Foodbank Hackathon: Develop an application to bring awareness to the number of individuals that will go hungry every day (every night, 1 in 11 kids will not eat). o Best Overall - Boston Children's Hospital Design Challenge: Build an adaptive toy for children with cerebral palsy.  Judging these projects were doctors, physical therapists, and patients. The Collins scholar who designed a project won for best overall design, and his project is going to be built in a lab! o First Place – Car Design Challenge - Collins hosted a design challenge to build a car that could travel the farthest. A group of scholars from Collins built a car to travel 39 feet earning first place.
