Our Collins Middle School Summer Reading Program has been designed to keep everyone engaged in meaningful and enjoyable reading throughout the summer. This will allow you to further develop your LOVE of reading as you enrich your background knowledge, strengthen your vocabulary, and improve your comprehension so that you’re ready to sink your teeth into another year of personal growth and academic success.
What must each CMS scholar do to complete the summer reading requirement?
- Choose and read at least one fiction or nonfiction book that is just right for you in July and do the same thing in August.
There are lots of great options here: https://www.salemhslibrary.org/find-that-next-great-read.html
Create an account in Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/). (It’s like Facebook for readers!)
2. Throughout the summer, each time you finish a book, log in to your Goodreads account and give it a rating of 1 to 5 stars. (You may also enter comments or your own review of the book.) Our goal is that by the time scholars return to CMS in September, we will have achieved 100% participation.
3. In the new school year be ready to:
- Discuss your books with other students and your ELA teacher; and
- Complete a brief writing task that relates to your summer reading.
SHARP SHARK SUMMER READING CHALLENGE:
OK – You’ve selected, read and reviewed two books, and it’s only July 7th! Why stop there? Keep tearing into great books and submitting ratings or book reviews of each one online! All scholars who read and review two books by the time we return to school will be entered into a prize drawing to be held during the second week of school. Scholars that read four or more books will be entered into the grand prize drawing.
